These petit donut-like pastries known as ‘Fritule’ represent the inevitable part of a long and proud Croatian culinary tradition which you’ll have a chance to try any time you decide to visit Croatia!
Fritule are one of the symbols of Croatian culinary delights traditionally served during holidays, carnival time and wedding receptions throughout Adriatic coast and further. Nowadays, since it represents Croatian culture in a way and, above all, because it’s simply super delicious, you can taste it any time you visit Croatia and our islands.
These little balls of heaven vary from region to region – sometimes locals like to enrich them with extra raisins, lemon zest or grated orange peel or even rum. But the main ingredients remain always the same which we’ll share this time with you, too 🙂
Home-made Croatian Fritule Recipe
- 250ml plain yoghurt
- 2 eggs
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 400g all purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- pinch of salt
- 3 tbsp rum (or any kind of brandy)
Mix all the ingredients in a larger bowl and, with a smaller spoon, take a bit of the dough and deep fry it in hot oil, approx. 5 – 10 Fritule at the time. When its colour becomes lightly brown on each side, place them on a paper towel to get rid of the excess fat.
Sprinkle them with powdered sugar or use your favorite melted chocolate as a topping and enjoy in taste of Croatian tradition in your very own home! Bon Appétit!
